Martin Lloyd

I am a BSc in Chemistry, MSc in the mathematical foundations of Computer Science, and DPhil in Mathematical Physics. A chartered engineer, my career was in civil mission- and safety-critical systems. I co-founded an industrial systems company and was its engineering director for several years. I worked for decades in collaborative European R&D projects. I am principal author of the UK's internationally adopted MCERTS environmental data handling standard. I helped devise the protocols for safety-related and environmental software audits that are now used in many countries. I was the UK’s lead expert on a European safety standards committee.

In 2019 a good friend, Eoin McCarthy, shared with me his concern about the injustices, like forced homelessness, caused by the UK’s Universal Credit state benefits system. It was plain to us that the use of AI and other applications in such systems has deep and far-reaching consequences. We therefore decided to contribute to tackling these issues. So with others we started JAAG. I served as a director until ill health forced me to step down. Where possible, I still assist JAAG’s projects.

I remain a trustee of a couple of Quaker charities. I am author and co-illustrator of a graphic novel.
